City of Colleyville - Building Design Ordinance

Summary: 1994 - 1995 the City Council of Colleyville held a development workshop with the Colleyville Planning and Zoning Commission. Because Colleyville was apparently on the verge of significant growth, concerns were being expressed about how the community would develop, and what the long-term esthetic qualities might be. Not wanting to leave this important element to chance, staff was instructed to consider means to channel expected commercial developments, so that an esthetically pleasing appearance and an organized environment might be accomplished. In conjunction with architects and others in the business community, an ordinance was developed that assigned points to certain desired building features, such as windows and doors, roof overhangs, awnings, etc. and other features that give a building more interest and character. This was developed into a “Building Design Ordinance” that required commercial developments to achieve a certain minimum level of points to be acceptable. This approach gave maximum flexibility to building designers to select which options and features most complimented their building design. Adopted in 1996, this ordinance is beginning to focus a Colleyville “Look” for the commercial developments along its main commercial corridors. This process is creating a definite community identify for Colleyville.
