The West Irving Library is Texas’ first LEED-certified, net zero energy library. Designed by EMJ Corporation, the site features over 1,400 solar panels that shade most of the parking spaces as well as 140 geothermal wells that provide heating and cooling for the building. The use of renewable energy combined with design features that maximize energy efficiency have achieved utility cost savings upwards of $100,000. Inside the library are modern features designed to please patrons, including a business center, 55 public computers, and SMART Boards.
LEED Gold Certification
The West Irving Library initially considered LEED certification to meet requirements set forth by Irving’s green initiative. A $1.158 million grant from the Department of Energy enabled the library to pursue a LEED Gold rating through the installation of the $1.7 million solar photovoltaic system. The geothermal heat pump system also reduced the building’s energy footprint, achieving 25—40% in energy savings. During the construction phase, recycled content materials were incorporated, and construction recycling and site management techniques were utilized. Sustainable building features include daylight harvesting, forty electric vehicle charging stations, and drought-tolerant native landscaping. The building also features a real-time reporting panel that offers an educational interface for visitors to interact with the building management system.
